What to look for
- Coppery-bronze body with one or more black ocellated (eye-like) spots at the base of the tail — some fish have several spots, a few have none
- No barbels (whiskers) on the chin
Seasonal starting point
Late summer through fall, with a smaller spring push on the flats.

Where it belongs
Coastal and estuarine water; shallow feeding areas, sand and marsh edges are useful places to learn its behavior.
How to start
Fish a controlled natural bait presentation or swim a paddle tail along an edge. Choose tackle that can land the intended fish without an unnecessarily long fight.
Handle with care
Support the body, keep handling brief and prepare tools before landing. Check current rules before retaining any drum.
