What to look for

Look for one or more dark spots near the tail base and a copper-to-silver body. “Puppy drum” means a young red drum, not a separate species.

Where it belongs

Coastal and estuarine water; shallow feeding areas, sand and marsh edges are useful places to learn its behavior.

How to start

Fish a controlled natural bait presentation or swim a paddle tail along an edge. Choose tackle that can land the intended fish without an unnecessarily long fight.

Support the body, keep handling brief and prepare tools before landing. Check current rules before retaining any drum.
