What to look for

Also called spotted seatrout. Dark spots extend onto the fins and tail; do not confuse every silver estuary fish with this species.

Estuaries and shallow coastal water, often near grass, prey and changes in current.

Start with a small paddle tail and a steady retrieve. Change depth or add a short pause while keeping enough line control to detect a bite.

Use wet hands and a suitable landing net; handle carefully and check seasonal or emergency rules before keeping fish.
