What to look for

Strong dark vertical bars, shell-crushing teeth and sharp fin spines. Young black drum and spadefish can cause confusion.

Where it belongs

Pilings, rocks and other structure supporting barnacles, shellfish and small crustaceans.

How to start

Control the fish without touching the dorsal spines; prepare pliers and a net before fishing beside structure.
