What to look for
Strong dark vertical bars, shell-crushing teeth and sharp fin spines. Young black drum and spadefish can cause confusion.
Where it belongs
Pilings, rocks and other structure supporting barnacles, shellfish and small crustaceans.
How to start
Accurate placement beside permitted structure matters more than distance. Crab or shrimp on a purpose-suited bait rig is a useful starting idea; our specialist sheepshead guide is still to come.
Handle with care
Control the fish without touching the dorsal spines; prepare pliers and a net before fishing beside structure.
